Biography
A resident of Northampton since 1982, Dr. Clayton has been practicing dentistry and enjoying the Pioneer Valley and all it has to offer ever since his arrival. “I purchased the home of former dentist Charles Gleason, complete with a basement dental office, and began my career in this home office setting. We also ran a daycare out of the house and provided free daycare to our staff. It was very good for our kids and our staff and allowed me to work close to home. I had wonderful training at the University of Pennsylvania and this has enabled me to handle most every dental situation I encounter.”
Raising three children with his wife, orthodontist Linda Rigali, Jim began studying more advanced dental fields, taking close to 2000 hours of continuing education over the years. His advanced knowledge of dentistry has been confirmed with recognition from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, and the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
The house office was limited, though, in space and the present commercial setting is now more suitable for modern dentistry. Dr. Clayton can provide comprehensive dental care under one roof. “My goal for my patients is to deliver the best care possible in a sensible approach that we can both agree upon.”
As a community member, Dr. Clayton has served for 31 consecutive athletic seasons coaching the successful Northampton High School running programs. A former competitor in track and field at Duke University, he wanted to share his knowledge of the sport with his children and the community. The Sugarloaf Youth Track program that Dr. Clayton started 23 years ago, and that he still runs today, has more than 300 area kids participate yearly; Jim has received an award from USA Track and Field for this amazing program.
“Dentistry is my first love but I enjoy many various activities as well: golf, yoga, bicycling, hiking with my dog Jula, sightseeing, museum visits, and vacationing with my wife.”
