Interpreter Services

The Interpreter Services Department at Cooley Dickinson Hospital has access to specially trained medical interpreters 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our service allows Cooley Dickinson Hospital to provide high-quality health care services to our patients who have limited English proficiency as well as deaf or hard-of-hearing patients for emergencies, in-patient care and scheduled appointments at all hospital locations.

We have onsite Spanish-trained medical interpreters, and the Medical Interpreter program can coordinate services in more than 170 languages through local agencies or a telephonic service.

The language interpreting service is a free service for all patients; our services can be requested by patients and family members as well as any hospital employee or physician.

To request medical interpreter services, please call Interpreter Services Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 413-582-2203, or fax to 413-582-2957.

We will do everything possible to respond to all requests in a timely manner and look forward to assisting you.

El Departamento de Interpretes del Hospital Cooley Dickinson tiene acceso 24 horas al día los 365 días del año a interpretes médicos especialmente entrenados. Nuestro servicio le permite al Hospital Cooley Dickinson proveer a nuestros pacientes con conocimiento limitado del Ingles o pacientes sordomudos cuidados de salud de alta calidad para emergencias, cuidados como pacientes internos y citas programadas en todas las localidades del hospital.

Contamos actualmente con intérpretes entrenados para  español y portugués en el hospital y el programa de Intérpretes Médicos esta en la capacidad de coordinar servicios de intérpretes en mas de 170 idiomas  a través de agencias locales o servicio telefónico.

El servicio de intérpretes es un servicio gratuito para todos Los pacientes.  Nuestros servicios pueden ser solicitados por pacientes o familiares  así como también por cualquier empleado del hospital y/o doctores.

Cooley Dickinson Interpreters

Armando Verea was born in La Habana and was raised in La Playa de Santa Fe where he lived until the age of 12 when he moved to Florida. Since then he has lived in the USA where he attended college in Florida and earned a Bachelors of Science in education/major physical ed/minor psychology and in Connecticut where he obtained his master’s in social studies. He worked as a teacher in a bilingual program and with the State of Connecticut. In his professional life being bilingual has been an important part of his job. In 2012, Armando decided to become an interpreter, pursuing his certificate as a continuation of his professional history and personal values as a human being. He has worked at Cooley Dickinson for 8 and ½ years.

Nació en La Habana y fue criado en La Playa de Santa Fe donde vivió hasta la edad de 12 años cuando se mudó a Florida. Desde entonces ha vivido en USA en donde asistió a la universidad en Florida y recibió su licenciatura en ciencias de educación con especialización en educación física y subespecialización en psicología y luego en Connecticut obtuvo su Maestría en estudios sociales. Él trabajó de profesor en un programa bilingüe y con el estado de Connecticut. A lo largo de su vida profesional el ser bilingüe ha sido una parte importante. En el 2012 Armando decidió convertirse en intérprete, obteniendo su certificado como continuación de su historia profesional y valores personales como ser humano. Él ha trabajado en Cooley Dickinson por 8 años y medio.

Emma Aldana was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. She attended college and obtain her major in Architecture in 1997. She moved to the united states in 2002. In 2009, when it became necessary to switch careers, Emma looked for a profession where she could help others and to be passionate about it. She realized that listening to her clients in architecture required lots of attentive listening and understanding the needs of others, something extremely necessary to provide excellent care to our patients. She created the Interpreter Services Department at Cooley Dickinson and has overseen it since then, over 11 years ago.

Nació y fue criada en Caracas, Venezuela. Asistió a la universidad donde obtuvo su título de Arquitecto en 1997. Se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 2002. En el 2009, cuando se hizo necesario cambiar de carrera, Emma buscó una profesión donde ella pudiese ayudar a otros y sentir pasión por su carrera. Ella se dio cuenta que el escuchar a sus clientes en arquitectura requería de una atención plena y compresión de las necesidades de otros, algo que es extremadamente necesario para proporcionar una atención excelente a nuestros pacientes. Ella creó el Departamento del Servicio de Intérpretes en Cooley Dickinson y lo ha dirigido desde entonces por más de 11 años.

Les Sepulveda was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He lived there until he was 3 years ago when he moved to the United States. He holds a BA in Business Administration with specialization in Business Media Communication. He also holds 2 minors, one in French and one in Music. As soon as he moved to the US, Les became interested in using his language skills to work. He learned about Medical Interpretation and went for his training to become a medical interpreter because of the social value of the profession and because he is a people person. He has worked with us for over 2 years.

Nació y fue criado en Ponce, Puerto Rico donde vivió hasta hace 3 años cuando se mudó a los Estados Unidos. Él posee una licenciatura en Administración de Empresas con especialización en comunicación empresarial. Él también tiene 2 subespecializaciones, una en Frances y otra en música. Tan pronto se mudó a los Estados Unidos, Les se interesó en usar sus idiomas para trabajar. Él se informó sobre la interpretación médica y tomo el entrenamiento a fin de convertirse en un Intérprete médico por causa del valor social de la profesión y porque es una persona amigable. Él ha trabajado con nosotros por más de 2 años.

Luisa Carolina Barreat de Kenny was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. Luisa moved to the United States in 2001 and holds a BA in Theater Arts. In her professional years she has been an actress, dancer, choreographer director, a college language instructor and a community health outreach and enrollment worker. In 2013 she obtained her interpreter’s certificate as a result of loving the language instruction and communications. Also informing her decision was seeing how needed the service was as well as having a medical background from both of her parents being MDs and her work in community health. She has worked at Cooley Dickinson for a little over a year.

Nació y se crio en Caracas, Venezuela. Luisa se mudó a los Estados Unidos en el 2001 y tiene una licenciatura en Artes Teatrales. Durante sus anos profesionales ella ha sido actriz, bailarina, directora de coreografías, instructora de idiomas en la universidad y trabajadora de inscripciones y alcance de salud comunitaria. En 2013 ella obtuvo su certificado de interprete como resultado de su amor a la instrucción de idiomas y comunicaciones. También influyó en su decisión el ver lo necesario que es el servicio así como el tener antecedentes médicos cercanos ya que ambos padres son Doctores así como también por su trabajo previo para la salud comunitaria.

Mariel Alejandro was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and moved with her family to the US when she was about 4 years old. She was raised in Massachusetts and earned her Associates degree as a medical assistant; she is also a billing coder and she is certified as an electronic health record specialist. Mariel worked in those fields before deciding in 2012 to become a medical interpreter and earned her certificate. Her decision was made as a result of having to interpret for her family throughout her life and her desire to help others. Therefore, immediately after finishing her training she started to work in the Interpreter Services department per diem and now she is a full-time interpreter. Mariel has been with Cooley Dickinson for 8 and ½ years.

Nació en Santurce, Puerto Rico y se mudó con su familia a Estados Unidos cuando tenía aproximadamente 4 años.  Ella creció en Massachusetts y obtuvo su licenciatura de Asistente Médico, también es una codificadora de facturación y posee también una certificación como especialista en historia clínica electrónica. Mariel trabajó en esas ramas antes de decidir convertirse en Interprete Médico en el 2012 y obtener su certificado. Su decisión fue hecha como resultado de haber tenido que interpretar para su familia a lo largo de su vida y su deseo de ayudar a otros. Por lo tanto, inmediatamente después de terminar su entrenamiento empezó a trabajar con el departamento de intérpretes por citas y ahora ella es interprete a tiempo completo. Mariel ha estado en Cooley Dickinson por 8 años y medio.

Cooley Dickinson Launches Video Remote Interpretation Services (VRI)

Interpreter Services is implementing VRI (Video Remote Interpretation) at the main campus. This service will allow quick access to Interpreters for Spoken Languages as well as American Sign Language (ASL). Each nursing unit has been equipped with their own device, and there is also one in the Emergency Department.
